One day they took the girls of our block to the showers. As we stood in line waiting to go inside, we heard that doctors were waiting in the showers to conduct a selection. The rumor was that they were taking aside all those who had festering sores and sending them to their death so that they wouldnât infect others with their sores. Given the unhygienic conditions and lack of nourishment, we all had festering sores on various parts of our bodies. The girls said that apparently half of us would be taken out to be killed.
We were terrified. I thought to myself, how can one be saved from such a selection? Up until now I had been saved by Heavenâs mercy and because of my fatherâs merits, but also by resourcefulness.
I looked ahead to the girls in front of us. One of them carried her shoes tied by their laces over her bare shoulder and held her clothes in a bundle in her hand, as we all did. Suddenly I noticed that her shoe, covered with mud, was touching the back of another friend, spattering her with mud and hiding a festering sore that she had on her back. I immediately suggested to my friends that we cover our sores with mud.
And so we did. My close friends and I quickly covered each otherâs sores with mud. When our turn came, we all went into the shower, and thus we were saved from this selection.
